BLM Names Managers for Headwaters Forest Preserve

Kathy Stangl, a Bureau of Land Management professional with experience in resource management and administration, has been named manager of the agency's Headwaters Forest Reserve on California's North Coast.

Stangl comes to the position from the BLM's Eagle Lake Field Office in Susanville, where she worked as the associate field manager. She succeeds Dan Averill, who retired.

"I am thrilled to be coming to Headwaters, where I can work directly on projects to restore forests and wildlife habitat and improve fisheries," she said.

Stangl holds a bachelor's degree in biology with an emphasis in fresh water fisheries. She worked 10 years as fisheries biologist in the BLM's Cottonwood, Idaho field office before moving to Susanville where she oversaw the natural resources management, wild horse and burro, engineering and administrative operations.

"Kathy's talents will be put to good use in her job as Headwaters manager," said Lynda Roush, manager of BLM's Arcata Field Office. "She has a solid understanding of the fisheries, wildlife and forestry issues important at Headwaters. She has the administrative skills necessary to administer the forest reserve budget and lead the staff."

The Headwaters Forest Reserve is 7,500 acres of public land six miles southeast of Eureka. The BLM manages the area to protect ecological and wildlife values, particularly stands of old-growth redwood that provide habitat for the marbled murrelet (a seabird), and stream systems that provide habitat for coho salmon. Both species are listed as "threatened" on the federal Endangered Species List.

The northern part of the reserve is open for public daytime uses. The BLM offers guided hikes into the southern portion. Hikes are offered at regular intervals between mid-May and mid-November.
