System of Early Intervention in Natural Environments: Where Children Spend Their Time
By Nebraska Departments of Education and Health and Human Services , Ed.
2000

Summary: This document from the Nebraska Departments of Education and Health and Human Services discusses why it is important for children with disabilities to spend their time in natural environments. Young children learn best when they are taught skills like eating, playing, moving, and communicating during the times and in the places most natural for them. The early intervention system is about helping children develop and practice skills in natural settings. Segregation of children with disabilities often leads to further isolation. Having opportunities to participate in meaningful activities with peers provides children with models for learning developmental skills, but also environments to promote the learning of citizenship, friendship, leadership, responsibility, and empathy.
