Tsuchiya, Yukio. Faithful Elephants: A True Story of Animals, People and War. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1997. A zookeeper narrates this heartbreaking story set in Tokyo during World War II. To protect the public from the possible escape of wild animals during the bombing of the city, it was decided that all the zoo animals would be killed. They were unable to kill the elephants by poisoned food or lethal injection as the other animals were killed. So the elephants were starved to death by the zookeepers who loved them. This powerful story conveys the deadly side effects of war.
