Acting Surgeon General Announces National Initiatives to Protect Children By
Reducing Exposure to Secondhand Smoke

WHAT:

Acting Surgeon General Kenneth Moritsugu will join together with the American Academy of Pediatrics to announce a new partnership to protect the nation’s children from secondhand smoke. The Environmental Protection Agency and the Administration for Children and Families will also highlight their joint initiative to reduce children's secondhand smoke exposure among the hundreds of thousands of children who participate in the national Head Start program.

EDITOR’S NOTE: The Acting Surgeon General will also release Children and Secondhand Smoke Exposure, an excerpt from the 2006 Surgeon General's Report on The Health Consequences of Involuntary Exposure to Tobacco Smoke, and a new bilingual toolkit developed by the HHS Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to support efforts by Hispanic/Latino parents and community leaders.
