Agricultural professionals from across the country recently gathered in Auburn,
Alabama, for the NRCS National Agronomy Conference. According to NRCS
National Agronomist Mike Hubbs, the agenda was packed with presentations and
field tours that provided the latest research and technology
updates from Alabama and throughout the U.S.

NRCS Soil Technician Survives Grizzly Bear Attack
Michael Mungoven and his two dogs were jogging the backcountry trail near his
Anchor Point home Sunday morning when a full-grown grizzly ripped through the
brush like a 400-pound bullet.

USDA Announces Recipients of 2006 Cooperative Conservation Partnership
Initiative Grants
NRCS has awarded nearly $5 million through the Cooperative Conservation
Partnership Initiative, a voluntary program that provides competitive grants for
state and local governments, tribes and non-governmental organizations to foster
conservation partnerships. Thirty-eight entities in 24 states received grants
totaling nearly $4 million. NRCS State Offices in 14 states received an
additional $1 million to carry out rapid watershed assessment projects in their
respective states with a broad array of partners. NRCS received 81 proposals
from 35 states.

National Audubon Society and the Natural Resources Conservation Service
Launch Campaign Promoting Wildlife-Friendly Backyards
NRCS in partnership with the National Audubon Society today announced the launch
of a new information campaign that provides conservation information to
individuals and communities as tools for better management of schoolyards,
backyards, neighborhoods and apartments. NRCS and the National Audubon Society
are dedicated to protecting birds and other wildlife and the habitat that
supports them. Initiative features posters on how to attract birds, bats, and
butterflies to your backyard, and invites people to take healthy yard pledge.

Indiana Earth Team Volunteers Blazing New Trails
In the last year, more than 100 Earth Team
volunteers provided more than 3,800 hours of service working on the Delphi
Historic Trails and at the Canal Interpretive Center. Read the story about

WinPond
– New Generation Pond Design Software
WinPond, a new computer program based on an NRCS Missouri pond program, is
intended to assist engineers, conservationists, and engineering technicians
design ponds and structures. Central National Technology Support Center
agricultural engineer Tony Funderburk is actively involved in launching the
computer program for the field application of pond designs.
