WASHINGTON, D.C. - National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Administrator Linton F. Brooks today announced changes in the leadership structure for the NNSA Service Center and Sandia Site Office in Albuquerque, NM.

Sandia Site Office Manager Karen Boardman has been named director of the service center, succeeding James Hirahara, who has announced his retirement. Patty Wagner, Deputy Manager of the site office, has moved up to become the new manager of the Sandia Site Office.

"Karen's move helps us maintain our strong leadership at the NNSA Service Center," Brooks said, "and I know Patty will do an excellent job at the site office. I am very pleased that they have accepted these challenging positions."

Both Boardman and Wagner have extensive managerial experience. Boardman's 20-year career with the Department of Energy (DOE) has included assignments as director of the weapon programs division, deputy manager for programs and technical support in Albuquerque, and acting deputy associate administrator for facilities and operations. She is a graduate of the University of New Mexico, with a degree in civil engineering.

Wagner joined DOE in 1995 after serving in other areas of the federal government, and has been deputy manager at the Sandia Site Office since December 2002. She previously served as the deputy for business administration at the former Albuquerque Operations Office and as the director of financial operations for the Resolution Trust Corporation in Denver, CO. She is a graduate of New Mexico State University with a degree in business administration.

Brooks has also named Steve Goodrum, deputy associate director at the NNSA Service Center, to be the new deputy manager of the Sandia Site Office. He has 26 years of experience in the nuclear weapons complex with responsibilities spanning both technical and business fields. He has previously served as manager of the Pantex Site Office and as the director of the Office of Nuclear Weapon Programs in Albuquerque. Goodrum has a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Texas at El Paso and a master of arts degree in business administration from the University of New Mexico.

NNSA is a semi-autonomous agency of the Department of Energy. It enhances U.S. national security through the military application of nuclear energy, maintains the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile, promotes international nuclear non-proliferation and safety, reduces global danger from weapons of mass destruction, provides the U.S. Navy with safe and effective nuclear propulsion, and oversees national laboratories to maintain U.S. leadership in science and technology.
