Program Description
In order to qualify for this benefit program,
you must be the spouse or dependent child of a service member (Active Duty
or Ready Reserve) who has full-time SGLI coverage. A “dependent child”
includes any unmarried child in one of the following categories:
- A natural child of the service member
- A legally adopted child
- A stepchild who is a member of the
service member’s household
- A child
between the ages of 18 and 23 who is a full-time student, or a child who
became permanently incapable of self-support before age 18
General Program Requirements
The Veterans’ Opportunities Act of 2001 extended
life insurance coverage to spouses and children of members insured under the
SGLI program, effective November 1,
2001.
Spouses of SGLI policyholders are
covered for up to $100,000 or the amount of the service member’s SGLI,
whichever is less. This coverage is automatic unless the service member
submits a written request to decline or reduce
coverage.
Additionally, the dependent
children of every active duty service member or reservist covered under
full-time SGLI are automatically insured for $10,000. Coverage for dependent
children is free and cannot be declined unless SGLI coverage is
declined.
