Fowler falls in 3-hole playoff

Murrieta's Rickie Fowler lost in a three-hole playoff with fellow American Mark Anderson on Thursday in the 2009 NEC Master of the Amateurs Championship in Melbourne, Australia.

After Fowler missed a birdie putt, South Carolina's Anderson made his 20-foot eagle putt for the victory at Yarra Yarra Golf Club.


Trahan is hoping to bag his limit

D.J. Trahan is going to give a second consecutive Bob Hope Chrysler Classic championship his best shot next week.

Keep in mind: Trahan, an avid hunter, is a pretty good shot.

In an extended, three-months-plus offseason, Trahan said he spent much of his time hunting. The highlights included shooting and harvesting an 850-pound moose in Canada and spending time on his own piece of hunting land.

PGA Tour players have big dreams 10 miles up the shore from Waikiki Beach at the Sony Open, the season-opener for those who failed to win last year and are optimistic that 2009 will be different.

That's particularly true for Harrison Frazar, who has another chance he wasn't sure he wanted.


Mountain View Country Club will be shuttered at the close of business today, sending some loyal golfers to other courses and leaving neighbors to wonder whether they'll be looking at dead grass in a few months.

Mountain View -- a nearly half-century old public course that once drew Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball and is still used by Rod Carew -- was a victim of the poor economy, a glut of Inland-area golf courses and "astronomical" operating costs, said Bob Burris, who manages the club's pro shop.


Annika Sorenstam and Mike McGee were married Saturday, four weeks after the Swedish golf star ended her Hall of Fame career.

About 125 guests attended the afternoon ceremony and evening reception at Lake Nona Golf and Country Club. McGee, the son of former PGA Tour player Jerry McGee, has served as managing director for her business brand since December 2006.

Actually, the 50th edition of the five-round, pro-am PGA Tour event officially will be known as the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic hosted by Arnold Palmer.

He's expecting to get a big kick out of the experience.
