U.S. Geological Survey Glacier Studies Project - scans of 35-mm color slides of glaciers published in Earth Magazine; digital images can be downloaded from the Website.

"A searchable directory [by Earth System components and subcomponents] of images, visualizations, and animations of the Earth." Updated frequently with new images. Large searchable archive of previously acquired images, visualizations, and animations of various Earth-System topics. See previous images under the cryosphere, including elements of glaciers, snow, and sea ice.

Time-lapse satellite images of changes on the Earth's surface. Need to order original images depending on the quality of the digital files that can be downloaded. For example, the two Hubbard Glacier images for 1985 (E-1564-810CT) and 1986 (E-1566-810CT) can be ordered with those accession numbers directly from the U.S. Geological Survey's EROS Data Center (EDC). Categories of images (numbers of images in parentheses) include: miscellaneous (7), agriculture (12), cities (14), deserts (8), disasters (6), forests (7), geology (5), water (14), and wildlife (8). Each of the paired images is accompanied by an explanatory text that should also be downloaded.

This is the most robust site found for public-domain images. It is a veritable gold mine of images and related information. The Website shows NASA's use of Earth remote sensing data for scientific and commercial applications. Daily image updates. Climate and environmental changes on Earth are measured by various NASA satellites. Organized around the following Earth System topics: atmosphere, oceans, land, energy, and life. Key terms are linked to a glossary. Includes Datasets, Reference, Features, and Experiment for each topic.

Superb U.S. Geological Survey website for gallery of Landsat images. Includes featured image, main gallery, change over time, Earth as art (examples of the Earth System), and interactive map.

Primary Website for the interagency international Global Land Ice Measurements from Space (GLIMS) effort maintained by the U.S. Geological Survey and the National Snow Ice Data Center, University of Colorado. Includes several Power Point presentations which contain satellite images of glaciers).

Collection of historical glacier photographs archived by the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC)

Selection of photographs of glaciers in various locations, mostly taken by the Swiss glaciologist, Jürg Alean, and the University of Wales glaciologist, Michael Hambrey. Glaciers online includes well written descriptions of glaciers based on the latest version (2004 of their book, "Glaciers," published by Cambridge University Press.
