The Healthy Marriage Initiative (HMI)

Tips Sheet for Marriage Education Curriculum Adaptation


The following is a list of Spanish-language curricula currently known to the national Hispanic Healthy Marriage Initiative (HHMI). The information about each curriculum was provided by organizations/curricula that contacted the HHMI or were present at the 2007 Smart Marriages Conference. This is not a comprehensive list, and it will be updated as the HHMI is notified of other Spanish-language curricula. The HHMI does not endorse any particular curriculum, and interested parties should contact the curriculum developers directly to confirm the availability of Spanish materials.


Alpha and Omega
Description:
The program began in November, 2001 and includes two parts: a Retreat and a Follow-up session. It “attempts to respond to the needs of marriages & families, especially in the area of intra-family abuse,” but it is open to all couples. It is used to teach couples the tools to resolve problems. Topics of curriculum include: good communication skills; personal growth; domestic violence and machismo; impact of violence on children; mistreatment of minors; and concepts on sexuality.

Active Relationships A.R.
Description:
The program was written in 2003 by Kelly Simpson, MA Psychology and LMFT, after years as a professional trainer for marriage education programs. Hispanic Professional TRAINERS are available to train facilitators, and Spanish workbooks are currently available for the following:

  1. Active Communication
  2. Active Money Personalities
  3. Active Romance & Intimacy
  4. Active Living to Make Love Last (Traditions) exercises; time limits; goals of workshops; etc
  5. Active Adults (for parents)

Becoming Parents Program
Description:
The Becoming Parents Program (BPP) is a 27 hour educational program for couples having a first child. The foundation of the program is the Prevention and Relationship Enhancement Program (PREP). The program consists of lectures, video clips, discussions and couple homework exercises and can be used with married or partnered couples who are becoming parents for the first time through birth, adoption or foster parenting.

Couple Communication Program by Interpersonal
Communication Programs, Inc. (ICP)

Description:
The Spanish curriculum has been available since approximately 2000. It advises instructors how to teach in Spanish, and curricula can be used to teach one couple at a time or in group sessions of two or two and a half hours each. Curricula topics do not focus on specific couple problems but instead focus on communication and listening skills. These include how to phrase effective statements, pre & post self evaluations, and the cycle of listening.

EnFAMILIA, Inc. Art & Family Education Center
Description:
This curriculum has been available since 1997 and is a ten-(10) session program. Curriculum topics include: getting to know self & others; communication skills; stress management & anger control; ways to prevent violence in the home; family values & attitudes related to intimacy; sensuality & sexuality; decision making/problem solving; making commitments to marriage; and parenting skills including discipline methods and ways to build good relationships.

Family Dynamics
Description:
A Spanish-language book, Que Necesita El, Que Necesita Ella, is available through Family Dynamics. Topics of this book include: the needs of males and females; infidelity; and how to overcome extramarital affairs.

Family Wellness Associates
Description:
This organization has worked with the Spanish-speaking population for the past 27 years. This program offers practical skills and tools for the entire family but emphasizes the couple. Spanish Curriculum topics include: parent/child relationships; the child’s role in a healthy family; relationships; and problem solving.

Love’s Cradle
Description:
A version of the Relationship Enhancement Program, Love’s Cradle is currently being used in the federally funded Building Strong Families Project (BSF). BSF is an initiative to develop and evaluate healthy marriage education programs for unwed parents. Participant materials and demonstration DVDs are available in Spanish.

Loving Couples, Loving Children

Description:
Designed for community-based organizations working with couples and families, the program consists of workshops that combine multimedia, small group discussions and specific skills-based exercises.

Marriage Mentoring: Twelve Conversations for Building Stronger Marriages
Description:
This program began in 1982, and is based on a storytelling model of mentoring and shared wisdom through oral tradition. It provides grassroots level mentoring through DVD mentor training and promotional CDs for recruiting support. This complete program has been translated into Spanish.

Marriage Preparation Resources
Description:
Marriage Preparation began 25 years ago for people being married in the Catholic Church. The Spanish curriculum is a workbook called En Las Buenas y Para Siempre.
Topics include: communication in marriage; spirituality; money matters; etc. This book can be used as a work book for people preparing to become marriage sponsors or couple mentors.

Description:
PAIRS-trained practitioners teach PAIRS in a variety of formats all over the U.S. Courses include experiential lessons on relationships, parenting and family dynamics, emotional literacy, communications, conflict resolution, sensuality and sexuality, and financial decision making.

PREP Inc. Prevention and Relationship Enhancement Program
Description:
This curriculum focuses on two key components: speaking and listening safely using the Speaker-Listener Technique (Técnica Orador/Oyente) and setting up ground rules when conflict arises. Topics in the Spanish curriculum book include: how to manage conflict (differences between men and women, basic rules to manage conflict, etc); how to manage essential problems (forgiveness, how to restore peace, etc.); and growth (preservation and protection of friendship, etc.) The workbook is a shorter version of the main book and asks questions about self and partner.
Other curricula developed by PREP Inc. include Within My Reach for low-income single individuals and Within Our Reach for low-income couples.

The Marriage Enrichment Weekend Program, Inc.
Description:
A parish/congregation-based marriage program for married couples, engaged couples and youth. Three different Spanish programs are available for married and engaged couples: Marriage Enrichment Weekends, Marriage Enrichment Retreat, and Marriage Enrichment Renewal.

World Class Marriage (Matrimonio de Clase Mundial)
Description:
This program is 15 hours long and was built upon data from Gottman and Rogers. It is specifically developed to teach couples skills for relationship success. Description:
The 10 Great Dates video-based program was published in 1997 by Claudia and David Arp, founders of Marriage Alive International. The DVD curriculum is designed to use with the book 10 Great Dates to Energize Your Marriage. The program combines dates and marriage education skills in a teach-out-of-the-box format. The DVD curriculum is available in Spanish (10 Citas Extraodinarias).
