The Honorable A. J. Eggenberger

Chairman

Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board

625 Indiana Avenue, N.W., Suite 700

Washington, D.C. 20004-2901

Dear Mr. Chairman:

This is to inform you that Commitments 502 and 504 of the Implementation Plan (IP) for the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board Recommendation 2000-1, Stabilization and Storage of Nuclear Materials, have been completed (enclosure).

Commitment 502 was to stabilize 50 percent of weapons grade plutonium, and Commitment 504 was to stabilize 50 percent of non-weapons grade plutonium by December 2006. Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) exceeded both these goals in November 2006. Verification of milestone completion was performed by the Los Alamos Site Office on January 8, 2007.

Commitment 509 was to stabilize 50 percent of the 248 kg of the materials through the Recovery Evaluation Process (REP). This commitment is also complete, since LANL has stabilized 126.1 kg of the materials through the REP. The commitment stated as 147 kg is incorrect and should be 124 kg. The error occurred during the transcription of data from Table 7.1-1, page 13, to the Summary Section, page 15, in the LANL IP. The Safety Issues Management System will be updated to reflect the correct numbers.

If you have any further questions, please call me at (202) 586-2179 or call Xavier Ascanio at (301) 903-3757.

Sincerely,

Martin J. Schoenbauer
