[DOE LETTERHEAD]

May 25, 2004

The Honorable John T. Conway

Chairman

Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board

625 Indiana Avenue, NW, Suite 700

Washington, DC 20004-2901

Dear Mr. Chairman:

This letter is to inform you that Commitment 111 of Revision 2 to the Implementation Plan for Stabilization and Storage of Nuclear Material for the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board Recommendation 2000-1 (July 2002) has been completed.

Commitment 111 requires the complete stabilization and packaging of oxides at Hanford, which was completed on February 20, 2004.

Remaining is the work at Richland regarding the weld porosity of some DOE-STD-3013 outer can welds referenced in the Assistant Secretary for Environmental Management’s February 5, 2003, letter.  The resolution for Commitment 110 was to either re-weld the outer can welds or extensively radiograph and analyze the outer containers’ welds.  The referenced outer cans are being re-welded and the work will be completed by June 30, 2004.

Should you or your staff have any questions concerning these issues, please contact me at (202) 586-0738 or Keith Klein, Manager Richland Operations Office, at (509) 376-7395.

Sincerely,

Dr. Inés Triay

Deputy Chief Operating Officer
