April 11, 2003
The Honorable John T. Conway
Chairman
Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board
625 Indiana Avenue, NW, Suite 700
Washington, D.C. 20004-2901
Dear Mr. Chairman:
This letter is to report on the status of
two Savannah River Site (SRS) commitments of Revision 2 to the Implementation
Plan for Stabilization and Storage of Nuclear Material for the Defense
Nuclear Facilities Safety Board Recommendation 2000-l (July 2002). Commitment 207 has been completed and
commitment 224 is late. Specifically,
-
Commitment
207: SRS began packaging plutonium metal into
welded DOE-STD-30 13 outer-cans on April 1, 2003.
-
Commitment
224: Begin disposition of pre-existing
high-enriched uranium (HEU) solutions, was due to be completed in March 2003. SRS began the blend-down of HEU solutions to
low-enriched uranium (LEU) solutions in February 2003 and is ready to ship the
material off-site for disposition.
However, the Tennessee Valley Authority vendor has experienced project
delays precluding their ability to receive the LEU solutions. The Department expects to begin shipment of
LEU solutions by June 2003.
If you have any further questions, please
call me at (202) 586-7709 or Mr. Paul Golan, Chief Operating Officer, at (202)
