[DOE LETTERHEAD]

April 27, 2000

The Honorable John T. Conway
Chairman
Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board
625 Indiana Avenue, NW
Suite 700
Washington, D.C. 20004

Dear Mr. Chairman:

Earlier this year, we committed to provide you Revision 3 of the Implementation Plan for Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board Recommendation 94-1, Remediation of Nuclear Materials in the Defense Nuclear Facilities Complex, by April 2000. We now expect to provide it to you by the end of May 2000.

Revision 3 will reflect our latest plans for completing stabilization activities and will incorporate the latest resource-loaded baselines from several sites. Our staffs are working closely together to develop a mutually acceptable plan that will lead to the reduction of risk from nuclear materials remaining to be stabilized. We intend to have the Revision 3 plan serve as the Department's Implementation Plan in response to your Recommendation 2000-1.

If you have any further questions, please contact me or have a member of your staff contact Mr. David Huizenga at (202) 586-5151.

Yours sincerely,

Bill Richardson
Secretary
