Provides information about the year that devastating eruption of the Soufriere Hills volcano in Montserrat. The crater has not completely calmed down. Souffeire Hills became active in July 1995 and kept warming until it erupted in June 1997 in a blast that nearly obliterated two thirds of the island, left 10 people dead and nine others missing. Pyroclastic flows -- moving about 100 miles per hour and difficult to outrun -- and ash deposits destroyed the island's capital of Plymouth and its only airport, in addition to many homes and villages in the island’s southern end.
