The
Irkutsk State University (IGU) |
Founded on October 27, 1918, Irkutsk State University (IGU) was the first
institution of higher learning in eastern Siberia and the Far East. Today IGU
is among the top ten classical universities in Russia and is a member of Eurasian
and international university associations. IGU includes three instructional
institutes and eleven academic divisions that train specialists in forty-six
fields. The university has eighty-two departments, four scientific-research
institutes, a regional research library, a center for new computer technology,
an observatory, a botanical garden, a lyceum, a weekend educational program,
preparatory courses, a humanities center, an Internet center, and branches
in the cities of Angarsk and Bratsk.
IGU maintains the highest academic standards. It has an enrollment of more than
14,000 students and a faculty of 780, including 160 full professors and 434 assistant
professors and lecturers. All departments work in close cooperation with the
institutes of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The university has established educational partnerships with Liaoning University (Shenyang, China), the University of Maryland (United States), Paichai University (South Korea), and the “Ufuk” Educational Foundation (Turkey).
Irkutsk State University’s Regional Research Library
The library opened at the same time as the IGU and has become a major regional research and cultural institution. The library taps information resources on the Internet, conducts scholarly research, exploits computer technology, creates electronic resources, and develops marketing programs. It is housed in four library buildings and seven of the university’s lecture halls. There are thirteen reading rooms for educational, scientific, and social-science literature; reference works; a science and business reference center; a foreign-literature reference center; and a department of bibliography and cultural/historical education. There are also facilities for inter-library loan and a marketing section. Approximately 50,000 readers use the library each year–teachers, scholars, students from IGU and other educational institutions, and other researchers from the city and region. The library has several subscriptions to educational, scientific, and art literature.
With more than three million volumes in both Russian and foreign-languages covering all disciplines, the library’s collections are the largest in Siberia and the Far East. The “Golden Collection” comprises rare books and manuscripts. The Russian portion of the rare book collection includes early printed works, books from the era of Peter the Great (1672-1725), rare eighteenth- and nineteenth-century books, items from the book collections of the Decembrists M. S. Lunin, S. P. Trubetskoi, and S. G. Volkonskii, and the collections of N. S. Romanov (a nineteenth-century Irkutsk bibliophile), V. N. Basnin (a nineteenth-century Irkutsk patron of the arts), and others.
The periodicals collection is unique. The Siberian journals published before
1775 are a bibliographic treasure. The collection of Siberian and Far Eastern
pre-revolutionary newspapers is the most complete in Siberia. The library has
a staff of more than 150 persons.
