Human Resources (HR) Community & Document Directory in the NIH Portal

HR Portal User Guides (for NIH Employees)

HR Portal User Guides (for OHR Employees)

The NIH Portal

The NIH portal provides, subject to prevailing access restrictions, a single place to access all the information you need to do your job, 24 hours a day, whether you are at your workplace, in a satellite office, at home, or on business travel. The NIH Portal allows you to customize your portal experience to your jobs needs. It also contains several business area communities to serve the needs of administrative and scientific staff NIH-wide. The NIH Portal is intended to be a powerful tool to help you organize and maneuver through the information overload we encounter every day.

The HR Community

A Community is a defined portal area for consolidating content and portlets on a particular topic or for a particular group of users. It can serve as a collaborative area for topical discussions or virtual work spaces for project teams. The Human Resources community was designed to serve both of these functions. There are four pages in the HR Community, Information for Employees, HR Professionals, Info for Managers (to be developed), and the HR Calendar. The Information for Employees page concentrates on bringing employees the tools and information necessary to make self-service human resources more available and user-friendly. From here, employees will be able to search for job vacancies; change their benefits, taxes, or address through Employee Express; and access all the same online information that the HR professionals use to service the NIH. The community page for HR Professionals contains a collaborative area for OHR-wide project teams, a calendar of OHR events and meetings, and access to all the NIH systems they use to do their jobs on a daily basis. The Info for Managers page will be developed, in the future, to bring managers HR reports and access to the HR information that they need to manage their staff. Finally, the HR Calendar provides NIH employees with open season dates and HR staff with a collaborative Office calendar. The OHR SPD has placed a community manager gadget on the Information for Employees page to encourage feedback and suggestions from community users. If you have suggestions or comments on the HR Community, please e-mail ohrweb@od.nih.gov.

The Human Resources Document Directory

The NIH Portal document directory provides Portal content organized into a logical, navigable structure. Also referred to as Taxonomy, the document directory is comprised of folders which provide an alternative to text and keyword searching. The HR document directory was built by an NIH-wide focus group that determined the main topic/folder categories and the information that would be brought into the NIH Portal from sources including the NIH HR website, the OPM website, and other HR sites government and worldwide. Now, there are over 40 categories and more than 4,000 documents that populate the HR document directory. With NIH, HHS, OPM, CFR, and other regulatory information, it is the most comprehensive collection of NIH HR information anywhere. Additionally, users are encouraged to suggest documents and websites to be included. If you have suggestions or comments on the HR Document Directory, please e-mail ohrweb@od.nih.gov.
