Dennis Michael Miotla

Deputy Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Power Deployment

Dennis M. Miotla is the Office of Nuclear Energy’s first Deputy Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Power Deployment.  He was appointed to this position in November 2006.

In this position, Mr. Miotla has a broad range of management responsibilities for nuclear power programs, facilities, and infrastructure.  He directs the activities of four Offices that include Light Water Reactor Deployment, Gas Reactor Deployment, Laboratory Facilities Management and Radioisotope Power Systems. He also is responsible for coordinating site and NE program activities with the Manager of the Idaho Operations Office.

Mr. Miotla has been with the Department of Energy for 16 years and has held progressively more responsible positions.  Prior to his most recent position, he was the Deputy Director for Nuclear Operations, Office of Nuclear Energy. In that position he was responsible for the transition of the Idaho National Laboratory contract and the management of the Idaho site programs as well as the radiological facilities programs which encompassed several DOE sites. He was awarded a Presidential Rank Award for his outstanding performance in the advancement of these programs.

Prior to coming to the Office of Nuclear Energy, Mr. Miotla was the Director, Office of Research, Development and Test Facilities, Office of Defense Programs, National Nuclear Security Administration.  Mr. Miotla was responsible for the Federal management of operations and facilities at Los Alamos, Sandia, and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories, and the Nevada Test Site.  He was instrumental in developing facility management and construction project management programs for the Office of Defense Programs.  While in Defense Programs, he received numerous awards including the Deputy Secretary’s Award of Achievement for the Strategic Computing Center at Los Alamos National Laboratory, the Defense Programs Award of Excellence for significant contributions to the Stockpile Stewardship Program, and the National Nuclear Security Administration’s Silver Medal for distinguished service in the National Security of the United States.

Mr. Miotla came to the Department of Energy in 1990 with over 16 years of experience at the Westinghouse Electric Corporation’s Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania.  At Bettis, he held a variety of positions in nuclear reactor design and analysis, project management, and nuclear facility operations.

Mr. Miotla holds a Bachelor of Science degree in nuclear engineering from the State University of New York at Buffalo and a Master’s of Business Administration from the University of Pittsburgh.
