1. Where is the Alturas Field Office located?
The BLM Alturas Field Office is located at 708 West 12th Street, just off of Highway 299 in the town of Alturas, California.
2. What is there to do in this area?
There are many things to do in the Alturas Resource Area. You can go camping, fishing, hunting, swimming and more. There are tons of watchable wildlife areas and scenic viewpoints. If you have an interest in archeology or cultural resources, we have numerous sites around this area that you can visit.
3. How many campgrounds do you have? Do you require reservations? Are there any fees or restrictions?
The Pit River Campground is located three miles west of Fall River Mills off of Highway 299, then one mile south on Pit#1 Powerhouse Road. The last ½ mile is a gravel road. There are eight campsites with tables, fire rings, shade and parking for small RV's. There is no potable water, electricity or dump facilities. This campground is on a first come, first serve basis. No reservations are taken and there is a fourteen day stay limit.
4. Where are good places to fish?
The Alturas Resource Area has many places to go fishing. A few of the better area's are Fitzhugh Creek, Nelson Corral, Baily and Delta Reservoirs and the Pit River Campground.
5. Where are good places to hunt?
The BLM managed public lands around Alturas offer some of the best hunting in Northern California for pronghorn antelope and mule deer. Areas such as the Tablelands, Tule Mtn. country and Graven Ridge are popular spots.
6. What type of summer employement opportunities are available?
Summer employment opportunities available for this resource area are mainly fire fighting positions. The Alturas Field Office positions can be found on usajobs.opm.gov. Applications need to be in by January 31st for early consideration. Selections are made in late March and early April.
7. What types of maps do you have?
We do have map that cover our resource area, which include portions of Modoc, Lassen, Siskiyou and Shasta counties. We sell Surface Mineral and Surface Management maps. We sell Topographical Maps and State Maps.
8. Where are your firewood cutting areas located?
We have twelve designated firewood cutting areas: Barnes Grade, Beaver Creek, Centerville, Christensen Corral, Kramer Allotment, McKae Flat, Mitchel Hill, Moon Springs, Nine-Mile Burn Area, North Coble, Ryegrass Swale, and Sherlock Springs. Permits are required and you should always call the number on your permit to see if the areas are open.
9. Do you have hiking areas? Where are these trails located?
You can go hiking on all BLM land, as long as there is public access. There are three main trails: the Applegate Trail, the Lassen Trail and Nobles Road. There are also designated trails on the Modoc National Forest, such as the Highgrade National Recreation Trail the North Star Basin Trail.
10. Do you have mountain biking areas?
We have three designated mountain biking areas: Devils Garden Mountain, The Likely Mountain Challenge and Woodland Jurassic Ride. The Devils Garden Mountain route is located about four miles west of Alturas, off of Highway 299. The Likely Mountain Challenge is located about five miles south of Likely. The Woodland Jurassic Ride is located about four miles southwest of Alturas off of the Centerville Road.
