Percent distribution of AIDS cases among female adults and adolescents in the Northeast (number of cases = 2,919).  Broken out by population size and transmission category: In MSA >= 500,000 31 percent of cases are in the injection drug use transmission category; 66.2 percent are in the High-risk heterosexual contact (heterosexual contact with a person known to have, or to be at high risk for, HIV infection) transmission category; 2.7 percent are in the Other transmission category (includes hemophilia, blood transfusion, perinatal exposure, and risk factor not reported or not identified). In MSA of 50,000 to 499,999 33.9 percent of cases are in the Injection drug use transmission category; 63.8 percent are in the High-risk heterosexual contact (heterosexual contact with a person known to have, or to be at high risk for, HIV infection) transmission category; 2.3 percent are in the Other transmission category (includes hemophilia, blood transfusion, perinatal exposure, and risk factor not reported or not identified). In nonmetropolitan areas, 32.6 percent of cases are in the Injection drug use transmission category; 66.4 percent are in the High-risk heterosexual contact (heterosexual contact with a person known to have, or to be at high risk for, HIV infection) transmission category; 1 percent are in the Other transmission category (includes hemophilia, blood transfusion, perinatal exposure, and risk factor not reported or not identified).

Percent distribution of AIDS cases among female adults and adolescents in the Midwest (number of cases = 948).  Broken out by population size and transmission category: In MSA >= 500,000 23.6 percent of cases are in the injection drug use transmission category; 74.1 percent are in the High-risk heterosexual contact (heterosexual contact with a person known to have, or to be at high risk for, HIV infection) transmission category; 2.3 percent are in the Other transmission category (includes hemophilia, blood transfusion, perinatal exposure, and risk factor not reported or not identified). In MSA of 50,000 to 499,999 21 percent of cases are in the Injection drug use transmission category; 76.6 percent are in the High-risk heterosexual contact (heterosexual contact with a person known to have, or to be at high risk for, HIV infection) transmission category; 2.5 percent are in the Other transmission category (includes hemophilia, blood transfusion, perinatal exposure, and risk factor not reported or not identified). In nonmetropolitan areas, 16.8 percent of cases are in the Injection drug use transmission category; 78.8 percent are in the High-risk heterosexual contact (heterosexual contact with a person known to have, or to be at high risk for, HIV infection) transmission category; 4.4 percent are in the Other transmission category (includes hemophilia, blood transfusion, perinatal exposure, and risk factor not reported or not identified).

Broken out by population size and transmission category: In MSA >= 500,000 20.4 percent of cases are in the injection drug use transmission category; 77.9 percent are in the High-risk heterosexual contact (heterosexual contact with a person known to have, or to be at high risk for, HIV infection) transmission category; 1.7 percent are in the Other transmission category (includes hemophilia, blood transfusion, perinatal exposure, and risk factor not reported or not identified). In MSA of 50,000 to 499,999 16.3 percent of cases are in the Injection drug use transmission category; 81.8 percent are in the High-risk heterosexual contact (heterosexual contact with a person known to have, or to be at high risk for, HIV infection) transmission category; 1.9 percent are in the Other transmission category (includes hemophilia, blood transfusion, perinatal exposure, and risk factor not reported or not identified). In nonmetropolitan areas, 21.7 percent of cases are in the Injection drug use transmission category; 76.9 percent are in the High-risk heterosexual contact (heterosexual contact with a person known to have, or to be at high risk for, HIV infection) transmission category; 1.4 percent are in the Other transmission category (includes hemophilia, blood transfusion, perinatal exposure, and risk factor not reported or not identified).

Broken out by population size and transmission category: In MSA >= 500,000 27.3 percent of cases are in the injection drug use transmission category; 68.7 percent are in the High-risk heterosexual contact (heterosexual contact with a person known to have, or to be at high risk for, HIV infection) transmission category; 4 percent are in the Other transmission category (includes hemophilia, blood transfusion, perinatal exposure, and risk factor not reported or not identified). In MSA of 50,000 to 499,999 31 percent of cases are in the Injection drug use transmission category; 65.4 percent are in the High-risk heterosexual contact (heterosexual contact with a person known to have, or to be at high risk for, HIV infection) transmission category; 3.5 percent are in the Other transmission category (includes hemophilia, blood transfusion, perinatal exposure, and risk factor not reported or not identified). In nonmetropolitan areas, 23 percent of cases are in the Injection drug use transmission category; 75.7 percent are in the High-risk heterosexual contact (heterosexual contact with a person known to have, or to be at high risk for, HIV infection) transmission category; 1.2 percent are in the Other transmission category (includes hemophilia, blood transfusion, perinatal exposure, and risk factor not reported or not identified).
