The Honorable John T. Conway
Chairman
Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board
625 Indiana Avenue, NW
Suite 700
Washington, DC 20004

Dear Mr. Chairman

Consistent with the Department of Energy's (DOE) Implementation Plan for Defense Nuclear Facilities Board (DNFSB) Recommendation 2000-2, Configuration Management, Vital Safety Systems, I am forwarding initial Phase II assessment reports from the Office of River Protection, Richland Operations Office, and Savannah River Operations Office. These are the final deliverables for the Office of Environmental Management (EM) under Recommendation 2000-2.

EM facilities at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and the Nevada Test Site are currently undergoing Phase II assessments. Commitment 11 of the Implementation Plan requires that the Lead Program Secretarial Officer submit the initial Phase II assessment report for each site. Therefore, the initial Phase II assessment reports will be submitted to the DNFSB by the National Nuclear Security Administration. EM will continue to share copies of subsequent Phase II assessment reports with your staff.

If you have any questions, please contact me at (202) 586-7709 or have your staff contact Mr. William Boyce at (202) 586-8856.

Sincerely,

Jessie Hill Roberson
Assistant Secretary for
