Policies on Data Methods, Procedures, and Use
CDC maintains several systems that collect oral health data or report
results from analyses of those data. Some of the systems report data
collected by other agencies or organizations.
Oral health data collection occurs through
- Large national or state-based health surveys
- Voluntary reporting by state oral health programs
- Partnerships with national organizations that collect oral
health-related information
Oral health data reporting by CDC occurs through 5 Web-based systems:
- Dental, Oral and Craniofacial Data Resource Center (DRC)
- National Oral Health Surveillance System (NOHSS)
- Synopses of State and Territorial Dental Public Health Programs
(Synopses)
- Oral Health Maps (Maps)
- My Water’s Fluoride (MWF)
The data collected may appear in more than one of these systems.
Large national and state-based surveys include:
- National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) (reported
in DRC, NOHSS)
- National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) (reported in DRC, NOHSS)
- Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS)
(reported in DRC)
- Medicaid Current Beneficiaries Survey (MCBS)
- Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) (reported in DRC,
NOHSS)
- Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS)
- State Health Policies and Programs Survey (SHPPS)
- State and Local Area Integrated Telephone Survey (SLAITS)
- State Cancer Registries—National Program for Cancer Registries (NPCR)
and Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER)
- Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS)
Voluntarily reported information from state oral health programs
includes:
- Results from state oral health surveys (reported in NOHSS, Maps)
- Water fluoridation program information (reported in NOHSS, Maps,
Synopses, MWF)
CDC has partnerships with national organizations that collect oral
health-related information. These include:
- The Association of State and Territorial Dental Directors (ASTDD)
conducts an annual survey, The Synopses of State and Territorial Dental
Public Health Programs (reported in Synopses, NOHSS)
- The American Dental Association (ADA) collects a variety of
information related to dental practice and education through its survey
center. A list of dental programs and their accreditation status is
available on ADA’s Web site.
The number of accredited dental and dental hygiene programs in each state
is reported in the Synopses each year.
Where can I find information on the methods and procedures used to
collect these data or how to obtain the data?
Large national and state-based surveys
The DRC maintains a Catalog of Surveys and Archive of Procedures Related
to Oral Health which contain descriptions of these surveys, information on
procedures used to collect oral health data, links to each survey’s home
page and information about obtaining data sets. Public release data sets
for several of these surveys can be downloaded at Web sites for those
surveys.

Voluntarily reported information from state oral health programs
- State Oral Health Surveys. NOHSS includes descriptions of the methods
used by each state reporting survey results and contact information
regarding use of the data.
- Water Fluoridation Reporting System (WFRS). WFRS is a secure system
operated by CDC in cooperation with ASTDD and participating states. States
voluntarily enter water fluoridation data into WFRS. Participating states
choose to report some data through NOHSS, Synopses, Maps, and MWF. A
description of the methods used to collect data is available at

Information from partnerships with national organizations
Association of State and Territorial Dental Directors (ASTDD)*
- ASTDD is
a membership organization of the directors of oral health programs in the
50 States, Washington, DC, and U.S.-associated jurisdictions.

American Dental Association (ADA)*
- ADA is a membership organization of dentists and dental students in
the U.S. and abroad.
- ADA’s survey center collects a variety of information
about the practice of dentistry and dental education. Results from these
surveys are reported in publications available for purchase from the ADA
Web site. A list of dental programs including their accreditation practice
is available on the ADA Web site. The number of accredited dental and
dental hygiene programs from this list is reported annually in ASTDD’s
Synopses survey.
