Child Welfare Training
Program Description
This program upgrades the skills, knowledge and qualifications of prospective and current child welfare agency staff and supports special projects for training personnel to work in the field of child welfare. These discretionary grants are awarded to public and private non-profit institutions of higher learning and are designed to assist State child welfare agencies in developing a stable and highly skilled workforce for providing effective child welfare services. Further, the Child Welfare Discretionary Grant Projects develop and maintain a strong University- Public Agency Partnership toward the goal of identifying and developing the appropriate staff competencies.
Statistics
- A total of 46 Child Welfare Training grants in the following priority areas are currently being implemented:
- Professional Education for Public Child Welfare Practitioners (23 Traineeship projects involving 216 students)
- Training for Effective Child Welfare Practice in Rural Communities (6 projects)
- Developing Models of Effective Child Welfare Staff Recruitment and Retention Training (8 projects)
- Training for Healthy Marriage and Family Formation (5 projects)
- National Evaluation of Child Welfare Training Grants (1 project)
- Training projects for Effective Child Welfare Practice with Hispanic Children and Families (4 projects)
Program Highlights
- Five of the Traineeship projects are for prospective and current American Indian and/or Alaskan Native Public Child Welfare staff.
- The Principal Investigators of the Developing Models of Effective Child Welfare Staff Recruitment and Retention Training have developed a very active network of 45 participants from 8 Institutions of higher learning to serve as peer consultants to each other, share best practices and develop common data elements for cross site comparisons.
- A Child Welfare Workforce Conference will be held in 2005 to highlight lessons learned from the Child Welfare Training Program.
