The Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) Clinic is a subdivision of the Cardiology Clinic that provides education, evaluation and close management of patients with congestive heart failure. CHF is a constellation of symptoms such as swollen ankles and legs, stomach pain or bloating, nausea, loss of appetite, trouble breathing with activity or when lying flat in bed, coughing and reduced energy level. It is a result of ineffective heart pumping. Common causes include coronary artery disease (blockages of the heart arteries), previous heart attack, high blood pressure, heart valve problems, diseases of the heart muscle, viral infection, and drug or alcohol abuse.
The CHF Clinic specializes in the identification and management of congestive heart failure. The goal is to provide optimal medical therapy to reduce symptoms and avoid ER visits and hospitalization through frequent office visits and phone follow-up. A multidisciplinary approach is utilized with such resources as physical therapy, occupational therapy, pharmacy, social work, nutrition and homecare.
Our Congestive Heart Failure Clinic is the 11th national CHF Clinic and 1st DOD CHF Clinic to receive the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) "Disease Specific-Care Certification". Walter Reed has been identified as meeting all of the national standards for the treatment of CHF set forth by the American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association.
