Resolution No. 6/08-5 ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON IMMUNIZATION PRACTICES VACCINES FOR CHILDREN PROGRAM VACCINES TO PREVENT Haemophilus influenza type b The purpose of this resolution is to incorporate the use of a pentavalent vaccine: diphtheria and tetanus toxoids, acellular pertussis, haemophilus influenza type b, and polio vaccines and to clarify the recommended schedule for the currently available vaccines for prevention of Haemophilus influenza type b. VFC resolution 2/99-3 is repealed and replaced by the following: Eligible groups All children 6 weeks to 5 years of age. Recommended Schedule for Haemophilus influenza type b (Hib) Vaccines The recommended schedule included 3 or 4 doses of a Hib containing vaccine by age 2 years, depending on the specific vaccine. The Hib doses should be given at the following ages: Dose Age Primary 1 2 months Primary 2 4 months Primary 3 6 months* Booster 12-15 months *The third dose of the primary series is not necessary if PRP-OMP Hib vaccines (PedvaxHib® or Comvax®) are administered at age 2 and 4 months. If any dose in the primary series utilizes PRP-T Hib vaccines (ACTHib® or Pentacel®), the third primary dose at age 6 months is required. TriHIBit® (DTaP/Hib) should not be used for the primary series, but can be used for the booster doses in children age 12 months or older. NOTE: Use of brand names is not meant to preclude the use of other licensed Hib vaccines. Minimum age and intervals for Hib vaccines Minimum age: 6 weeks Mininum Intervals for Primary Series Doses: Up to Age 12 Months/4weeks Mininum Interval for Booster Dose: Age 12 Months or older/8 weeks Catch-Up Vaccination The ACIP recommends Haemophilus influenzae type b vaccine for all children through 5 years of age. If Hib vaccination is not initiated by 6 months of age, use the following schedule and consult the ACIP approved Catch-up Schedule: (Table) Age at first vaccination: 7-11 months Primary series: 2 doses at least 4 weeks apart Booster: Age 12-15 months at least 8 weeks after the second dose Age at first vaccination: 12-14 months Primary series: 1 dose Booster: 1 dose at least 8 weeks after the first dose Age at first vaccination: 15-59 months Primary series: 1 dose Booster: N/A (End Table) Recommended dosage Refer to product package inserts.
