Gagauzia and Transnistria : Moldova

Created and maintained by the

Collections and Services Directorate

Gagauzia, or Gagauz-Yeri, is a region in the south of Moldova consisting primarily of 150,000 Gagauz, a Turkic ethnic group but traditionally Orthodox Christian by religion. The region gained autonomous status through Moldovan legislation promulgated in 1995, which includes the right to independently determine issues relating to its political, economic, and cultural development. Comrat is the regional capital.

Transnistria (aka Transdniestria, Transdnestr, Pridnestrove) is the long and narrow strip of Moldova bounded on the west by the Dnestr River and on the east by Ukraine. The predominantly Russian and Ukrainian population of Transnistria attempted in 1990 to secede from Moldova and has maintained a separate but unrecognized government since then, known as the Dnestr Moldovan Republic (and other variations), or in Russian as Pridnestrovskaia Moldavskaia Respublika, using the city of Tiraspol as its capital. The breakaway region has looked to Russia for unofficial support.
