"Vasco da Gamma Seeks Sea Route to India" is an article written by Richard Sheppard that was originally published in "Old News," a journal published by Susquehanna Times and Magazine, Inc. The Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama (c.1460-1524) was commissioned by King Manuel I of Portugal to travel by sea to India. The king knew that India was the source of many spices that were scarce in Europe. Da Gama departed from Lisbon during July 1497 and reached Calicut, India, in May 1498.
