Beneficiary Resources--Medical Nutrition Therapy Services

Diet plays an important role in managing diabetes and renal disease. Medicare pays for medical nutrition therapy services to help people diagnosed with diabetes or a renal disease manage their conditions. Covered services include:

  • An initial nutrition and lifestyle assessment
  • Nutrition counseling
  • Information regarding managing lifestyle factors that affect diet
  • Follow-up sessions to monitor progress

This benefit provides 3 hours of one-on-one counseling the first year, and 2 hours each subsequent year. Additional services may be covered depending on medical necessity. A physician referral is required. The beneficiary will pay 20% of the Medicare approved amount (this is the coinsurance or copayment) after meeting the annual Medicare deductible.
