How long do children stay in foster care?
  Question
How long do children stay in foster care? My friend is in foster care. How long do kids usually stay in foster care? My brother, sister, siblings are in foster care. How long do they have to stay there?
  Answer

States report data to the Adoption and Foster Care Analysis and Reporting System (AFCARS) about children in foster care and children who are adopted from foster care.  According to the most recent AFCARS Report (http://www.acf.hhs.gov/programs/cb/stats_research/afcars/tar/report14.htm), approximately 42 percent of the children in foster care on September 30, 2006 had been in care for less than one year, 22 percent had been in care for 1 - 2 years, 12 per cent had been in care for 2 - 3 years, 11 per cent had been in care for three - four years, and 13 percent had been in care for five years or more.
