G. Brian Stephenson received S.B. and S.M. degrees in 1978 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a Ph.D. in 1983 from Stanford University. His dissertation research, in the group of Prof. Arthur Bienenstock, was in the area of time-resolved synchrotron x-ray scattering studies of phase transition kinetics. In 1983 he became a Research Staff Member at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, New York, specializing in synchrotron x-ray studies. Beginning in 1987 he was manager of the Statistical Physics Group. From 1987 to 1995 he was Spokesperson for the IBM-MIT Participating Research Group at the National Synchrotron Light Source. From 1990 to 1994 he was Director of the IBM-MIT-McGill Collaborative Access Team at the Advanced Photon Source (APS). He joined the staff of the Materials Science Division at Argonne National Laboratory in 1995. He is currently a Senior Physicist and Group Leader of the Synchrotron Radiation Studies Group, and Director of the Nanoscale Materials Collaborative Access Team at APS. He is co-author of 90 publications, and a Fellow of the American Physical Society. From 1999 to 2002 he served on the Scientific Advisory Committee for the Linac Coherent Light Source at Stanford University. His research interests include studies of crystal growth, dynamics of phase transitions, and novel synchrotron x-ray techniques.
