USGS Landslide Hazard Maps for Emergency Services in San Francisco Bay Area in 1998

The USGS produced two types of maps for the State of California's Office of Emergency Services (OES). Maps identified areas where:

• the greatest threat to property existed from the movement of deep-seated landslides, and
• life-threatening debris flows (a.k.a. mudslides) would likely have occurred in the event of an intense winter rainstorm.

The National Weather Service (NWS) worked with OES to identify potential "hot-spots" around the 9-county San Francisco Bay Area during heavy rain events in the winter of 1998.
