GLACIERS LEFT MARK ON CALIFORNIA

"Study: Glaciers Left Mark on California"
(The Associated Press DailyNews.com, 08/13/2003)
Glaciers clung to the slopes of a mountain just 75 miles east of now-sweltering Los Angeles as recently as 5,000 years ago, according to a new study. The glaciers on San Gorgonio Mountain were likely the southwesternmost in what is now the United States during the waning of the last Ice Age, beginning 20,000 years ago.

"San Gorgonio Wilderness" (BLM California Web Site)
The San Gorgonio Wilderness encompasses 37,980 acres and is a part of the eastern slope of the San Bernardino Mountains. With an elevation range from 2,300 to 5,500 feet, the topography in this area rapidly changes from low rolling foothills and canyons to steep, rugged mountains.

"Wind Energy in the San Gorgonio Pass Area" (BLM California Web Site)
The San Gorgonio Pass area is very suitable for wind energy development due to steady westerly winds in this area that are funneled between the San Jacinto and San Bernardino Mountain Ranges.  This constriction results in an acceleration of wind velocity to speeds suitable for wind energy development.

WILDLIFE TRIVIA OF THE WEEK - ANSWERQuestion Mark
Question: How has the redear sunfish adapted to its habitat to reduce competition with other sunfish?
Answer: The redear sunfish is the only one in its range that has adapted itself to occupying deep water areas and feeding on the substrate (bottom). All other sunfish in its range tend to stay in the shallower areas and eat near the shore. Learn more about this fish species in our BLM California online wildlife database.
