WEED OF THE WEEK

Native to Europe, this noxious weed invades cropland meadows, pastures, roadsides, clearcuts, and waste areas. The extensive underground root system can penetrate the soil as deep at 10 feet and grow laterally 12 to 15 feet a year. http://www.ca.blm.gov/bishop/tamarix.html (Photo of flower, and description.)

Roy Woychak, fire management officer for the Bureau of Land Management, said Saturday that about 15,000 acres of the bureau's land has burned.

"SUMMER HOME ON SIERRA RANGE. NEW FORST RULES COULD LIMIT GRAZING PERMITS" (Record Net, 08/12/2002)
Through a rusty gate and down a dusty lane, across a meadow vibrant with summer wildflowers, visions of the late 1800s spring to life around the rails of a weathered corral. The barn stands proud, but the adjacent cabin, whose footprint has been next to the corral since the 1880s, was done in by a couple of ranch hands who accidentally burned it down.

Agency officials concede they don't have the resources to provide as much support to owners as they would like, so the agency relies on an evolving national network of volunteers to work with people who adopt mustangs.
