Boating Safety

A speed boat crashes into some unsuspecting boaters

Safety Tips:

There are a few ways you can help make boating a safe experience:

  • Check and heed weather forecasts
  • Keep clear of swimmers and designated areas
  • Take a safe boating course
  • Wear a life jacket
  • Most importantly, alcohol is involved in over 50% of all boating fatalities. Please, don't drink and drive a boat.

Alcohol and Boating

Like driving a car, there are consequences for driving a boat while intoxicated. Someone who is arrested for boating while intoxicated faces the following:

  • Could face fines up to $6,250 and up to a year in jail.
  • Have boat registrations suspended for up to three years.
  • Lose his or her boat operation privileges for one year.
  • Must complete a boating safety class.
For more information on boating safety, you may visit the US Coast Guard boating website. Also, you may visit our National Water Safety website to get more information about boat safety and other water safety.
