Information Services: Technology

The Academy strives to provide the latest technology to assist with the development of the cadets. The technology comes in many forms – computer labs, classroom technology and cadet computing. Specialty computer labs at the Academy include:

  • Geographical Information System (GIS) Lab located in Smith Hall
  • CISCO Networking Lab located in McAllister Hall
  • Multimedia Language Lab located in Satterlee Hall

Each classroom is equipped with technology to assist with academic instruction and training. There are also numerous locations on campus where video teleconferencing capabilities exist.

The Ship Control and Navigation Training System (SCANTS) is a large, computer-based ship simulator used to teach and evaluate cadets, as well as prospective commanding and executive officers. SCANTS offers training in standard navigation procedures, ship handling, casualty response, navigation rules and radio communication skills in a simulated environment.

Cadet computing technology is determined annually. The Information Services Division solicits hardware and software requirements from faculty and cadets, before making a determination. Each cadet is issued a new computer during the Swab Summer program. Specifications for the Class of 2012 laptop.

Cadets are required to follow an acceptable use policy while accessing technology on campus.
