Becoming a User at the EMC

The first step to becoming a user is to register for access to Argonne's facilities using this link: Argonne National Laboratory's National User Facilities On-Line Registration System.

The next step is to complete an online EMC Proposal form. Proposals may be submitted at any time. When received, your proposal will be routed by the Director of the EMC for a technical and feasibility review. It will then be sent to the Proposal Review Committee for peer review. The Proposal Review Committee meets quarterly and will next meet at the end of February 2009 to review proposals that have been received by February 18, 2009. Before you start writing the proposal, you should note the following items:

1.  The EMC Proposal Web site will limit you to an access time of 1 hour.  A PDF version of the proposal form can be downloaded here so that you may better plan for your online proposal submission. To use your time efficiently, we suggest that you compose your proposal off-line and then cut-and-paste once you are logged in.

2.  If you are using a computer that is behind the APS firewall, you will need to configure your browser to access the EMC Proposal form. This link will provide you with the information you need to do that.

3.  Please fill out the form carefully, providing all of the requested information. Because each research project is unique, potential users are strongly encouraged to discuss the proposed research with EMC staff before submitting a proposal

4. The Proposal Review Committee wants proposers to describe the open scientific question to be solved by use of the EMC. For more routine confirmation of sample quality, etc., the open question solved by other analyses being done should be described in simple terms (but not just "these results will improve the properties of XYZ"). Renewing/continuing proposals should include a list of notable scientific achievement(s) during previous EMC research periods and the role EMC played. This is not a list of experiments done or papers published (although published papers should also be listed).

5.  Log in to the online EMC Proposal form with username "guest" with no password.

Details on types of access is available here. Upon approval of your proposal and possible staff assignment, you will be contacted by an EMC staff member to arrange scheduling.

Additional information on user requirements and user status can be found here.
