Glossary of organization services

Catalog Searching
Your organization searches its catalog for the patron or client, by appointment or on demand.
Copyright Clearance Services
Your organization determines the copyright holder(s) for a particular item and obtains the necessary clearances to enable the patron or client to borrow, rent, buy, or license that material.
Distribution Services
Your organization markets moving image materials to exhibitors, circulates them to theaters, and/or promotes them to the public, to moving image organizations, or to specific audiences. If your organization rents or leases films to commercial theaters, select this, not Rental.
Duplication/Licensing
Your organization copies material and sells the rights to use it under limited terms.
Public Exhibition
Your organization shows moving images to groups of people in a public exhibition space, such as a theater, museum, etc. Exhibition includes projection of films in a theater to an audience, or continuously running video in a gallery space.
Reference/Research Services
Your organization answers questions or does extensive research for the patrons or clients, beyond simple catalog searches.
Rental/Loan
Your organization gives an item for temporary use, sometimes for a fee, on condition that it be returned. If your organization is a distributor (marketing, circulating, and promoting moving image materials), select instead Distribution Services.
Restoration and Preservation
Your organization mitigates damage and deterioration of moving images by cleaning, rehousing, and repairing, or by copying and transferring the moving image to the same medium or a different one.
Sales
Your organization transfers ownership of footage to a client for a price. If the footage is to be returned, select Rental/Loan. If your organization sells the rights to use the material under limited terms, select Duplication/Licensing.
Storage
Your organization provides a stable, climate-controlled environment conducive to preservation of the moving image, where clients may keep materials for later use.
Viewing of films or videos
Your organization provides individual or small group viewing of moving image materials on the premises, by appointment or on demand. Viewing facilities may include projection facilities, editing tables, video monitors, etc., and may be made available for a fee, or free of charge.
