IFLA Funds MIC Localisation Study

The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) awarded a grant of 9,500 EUR ($11,500) to its Audiovisual and Multimedia Section for a one year planning study to explore localisation of the MIC website.  Localisation would facilitate access to MIC by non-English speakers through translation and localization of content to make it more meaningful to particular cultures.

The lead on the grant is James Turner, professor, École de bibliothéconomie et des sciences de l'information, Université de Montréal.  The project partners are Samira Sambaíno, Escuela Universitaria de Bibliotecología y Ciencias Afines (Montevideo, Uruguay) and Marwa El Sahn, Alexandria Library (Alexandria, Egypt).  The project will address localisation issues pertaining to the French, Spanish, and Arabic languages, and look at issues of variant English language orthographies.

The project deliverables include a report to guide the MIC Steering Committee, a kit that can be installed on the MIC site or elsewhere to enable users to build local language interfaces, and a demo site to test the kit in the three chosen languages.

James Turner delivered a presentation about the project at the 2006 AMIA annual conference in Anchorage, Alaska.
