Virtual Field Trip - Mullet and Egmont Keys
Mullet Key is the home of Fort Desoto State Park, a popular historical and recreational site.
This is one of the few sections along this coast that appears to be accreting sand. Recent surveys indicate
that Mullet Key is accreting sand on its northern point. To the north, the adjacent Bunces Key
and Shell Island, which were separated by a pass at least until 1994, are today connected, forming
one continuous barrier island almost to Long Key.
Egmont Key sits at the mouth of Tampa Bay. Egmont Key has seen high rates of
erosion within the last decade. Erosion has decreased the size of the island from about 500 to less than 300
acres.
