INTRODUCTION
The general microform collection of the Library of Congress,
which is in the custody of and serviced by the Microform Reading
Room Section, includes a large amount of microfilmed material of
interest to researchers in the field of religion. These holdings
vary widely in the types of materials microfilmed (e.g. books,
pamphlets, letters, manuscripts, serials, documents, and
dissertations). They also vary in time period covered, place of
origin, and language of publication.
The focus of this guide is microform collections rather than
individual items. Many of these collections have an obvious
religious or theological focus, while others contain partial
material of a theological nature or have relevance to study in this
area. Individual books or serials in fully or partially analyzed
collections are not included, since they have been cataloged
individually and can be found using standard search methods. For
further information see USING RESEARCH MATERIALS IN MICROFORM
(Research Guide No. 16).
Several other reading rooms in the Library also have microform
collections. These include the Manuscript Reading Room, African and
Middle Eastern Division Reading Room, Prints and Photographs
Reading Room, Asian Division Reading Room, and Folklife Reading
Room. (See the handout PUBLIC SERVICES IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS
for a complete listing). A representative sample of microform
materials in the field of religion available at these other
locations is included in this guide. Many of these additional items
and collections are listed in the Library's computerized, card, and
printed catalogs, and are easily searchable. However, for more
complete listings and descriptions, researchers in this field
should also consult the reference staff and specialized finding
aids available in these reading rooms.
This guide is arranged alphabetically, usually by title. Many
of the entries have been given brief annotations if needed to
clarify the collection's relevance in the field of religion. Please
also note that most microform collections include a guide which
further explains its contents. Guide numbers, where present, are
included.
To help identify relevant collections, an Index of Titles and
an Index of Alternate Titles and Selected Subjects and Keywords
have been included at the end.

GUIDE: Research Abstracts (AS36.X4415 MICRR). The guide is a
quarterly publication and a continuation of Monograph Abstracts of
which only two issues (one in 1973 and another in 1976) were ever
published. Every issue of Research Abstracts has a table of
contents, cumulative author and subject indexes, and a list of
abstracts. The items should be requested by LD number, listed at
the end of each abstract. For most of the early research papers
acquired by the Library prior to LD504, patrons should search the
MicRR card catalog or computer by author or title, to find whether
or not it is owned by the Library.
This is a collection of "highly specialized pre-and post-doctoral
research monographs and reports" that are of interest to small and
specialized audiences and which, because of their limited appeal,
might otherwise not be published. Although the collection began in
1973, Library of Congress holdings are incomplete especially prior
to 1982 (during that period the Library received only those
monographs that were deposited in the Copyright Office). From 1982
on, the Library has most of the collection represented in the
collection guides. Many of these monographs are in the field of
religion.

INDEX OF ALTERNATE TITLES AND SELECTED SUBJECTS AND KEYWORDS
Many microform collections are often known by one or another
variation of their titles; for example, a shortened, inverted or
more meaningful version. Many variant titles are listed and
cross-referenced below. A number of subject or keyword
cross-references have also been included. Because of the nature of
microform collections, it is difficult to list all access points.
Therefore, this index is NOT a substitute for a careful perusal of
the list of the collections themselves.
