Who We Are & What We Do

  Corps History

Liberty 1 and Ben Franklin

We are the nation's engineers, with a rich legacy predating the Declaration of Independence. Today's U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plans, designs, builds and manages a wide variety of projects for national, economic and environmental security. We are the world's premier engineering organization, with more than 30,000 dedicated professionals in technical centers and regional and field offices nationwide.

We build facilities for the Army and Air Force , dredge harbors and waterways for navigation, provide flood and coastal protection, supply water, power and public recreation, protect and restore wetlands and other natural resources, and support other government agencies with engineering, contracting and project management services.

The Philadelphia District

The Corps' Philadelphia District was established in 1866 to manage the water resources of the 13,000-square-mile Delaware River Basin and of the Atlantic Coast from New Jersey's Manasquan Inlet to the southern boundary of Delaware. Our boundaries include the following:

  • The Schuylkill, Lackawaxen and Lehigh (Pa.), Neversink, Cooper and Assumpink (N.J.), and Brandywine and Christina (Del.) subbasins.
  • More than eight million people in five states: New York's Catskill Mountains area, eastern Pennsylvania, western and southern New Jersey, most of Delaware, and part of northeastern Maryland.
  • The Delaware River Ports complex (Philadelphia, Pa., Camden, N.J., and Wilmington, Del.), two state capitals (Trenton, N.J., and Dover, Del.), and the metropolitan areas of Reading and Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton, Pa.

As part of the North Atlantic Division team, our diverse and highly skilled workforce of approximately 500 people includes engineers and technicians, biologists and other natural scientists, economists, accountants, attorneys, planners, contract specialists, project managers, dam operators, park rangers, and the officers and crew of the McFarland
