Has the highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 virus been detected in migratory birds in the United States?

Dr. Thomas DeLiberto
National Wildlife Coordinator
Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, USDA

Currently there’s little concern for people coming in contact with geese and ducks in parks or at lakes or anywhere in North America.  We currently do not have a strain of avian influenza that is harmful to humans or even chickens and other birds.  So at the present time, there’s really no concern from avian influenza from our birds here in North America.
