Centered in the vicinity of Koynanagar, about 160
miles southeast of Bombay, this shock killed 177
people, injured over 2,000, and left
50,000 homeless. Property damage was limited to
Koynanagar and several nearby villages.
At Koynanagar, all of the dwellings were damaged,
with 25 percent completely ruined.
This is one of the
classic examples of "reservoir-induced
seismicity" -- earthquakes caused by
the filling or changes in water level
of large reservoirs.
