Statement on National Science Education
Standards, by Secretary Shalala

I applaud the release today of the National Science Education Standards; and I commend the teachers, scientists and school administrators whose vision, convictions and hard work made the Standards a reality.

Effective science education must continue to be one of our most important national goals. The need for science literacy is not limited to those who seek careers as scientists. In the decades immediately ahead, more and more of the jobs in our increasingly technological society -- indeed, more and more of the routine activities of citizens in all walks of life -- will demand understanding of fundamental scientific principles. The Department of Health and Human Services is poised to work with educators and scientists in putting the Standards to productive use in classrooms all across America.
