What precautions can hunters take to reduce the risk for infection from avian influenza?

Dr. Thomas DeLiberto
National Wildlife Coordinator
Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, USDA

We recommend that they use some type of simple eye protection, some type of glasses so that they don’t get body fluids from the birds splashed into their face in particularly their eyes and their mouth.  We also recommend that they wear some type of gloves when they’re dressing their birds.  And we also ask that they cook their meat to 165 degrees Fahrenheit.
