Harris, Ph.D. (202) 472-5370 March 3, 1992 HHS Secretary Louis W. Sullivan, M.D., today announced six new private sector appointees to his advisory council on health promotion and disease prevention: Leslee (Honey) Alexander of Washington, D.C.; L. Patt Franciosi of Whitefish Bay, Wis.; Margaret Hayes Jordan of Dallas, Texas; Leticia Paez of El Paso, Texas; Irene Pollin of Bethesda, Md.; and Ardath Rodale of Emmaus, Pa. The Secretary's Council on Health Promotion and Disease Prevention provides a link to the private sector for advice to the secretary on national health goals and strategies. It is chaired by James Mason, M.D., HHS assistant secretary for health and head of the Public Health Service. Its membership includes all former assistant secretaries for health, the presidents of national health promotion and preventive medicine organizations and representatives from the public. "The members announced today reflect the council's new public representation and bring a strong tradition of public health activism to the council," Secretary Sullivan said. Ms. Alexander was an advocate for the health of families, youth and children in Tennessee before coming to Washington where she will serve on the board of the Corporation for Public - More - - 2 - Broadcasting. Ms. Franciosi, chair of the National Prevention of Mental-Emotional Disabilities Coalition, has been a mental health advocate for over 20 years. Ms. Jordan is vice president and regional manager of the Kaiser Family Health Plan of Texas. Ms. Paez, associate director and educational planning regional coordinator at Texas Tech University, has grassroots experiences with Latino, rural and adolescent health issues. Ms. Pollin, a psychiatric social worker, brings 17 years experience with chronically ill patients and their families to the council. Ms. Rodale, chief executive officer of Rodale Press Inc., is currently involved in AIDS education activities in communities and corporations as well as overseeing one of the largest health publishing companies in the United States. Tenure for public representation on the council is 2-3 years. ###
