SHALALA NAMES 2 TO ADVISORY COUNCIL AND REAPPOINTS 2 MEMBERS

HHS Secretary Donna E. Shalala has appointed two members to the Practicing Physicians Advisory Council.

Secretary Shalala swore in the new members Monday during the council's quarterly meeting, which concludes today. Nancy-Ann DeParle, Administrator of the Health Care Financing Administration, introduced the new members.

The new appointees are Jerold M. Aronson, M.D., a pediatrician from Narberth, Pa., and Sandra Reed, M.D., an obstetrician-gynecologist from Thomasville, Ga. They will serve four-year terms.

Marie G. Kuffner, M.D., of Los Angeles, Calif., a current member, was appointed vice chairman.

Reappointments to the council are Sandral Hullett, M.D., a family practitioner from Eutaw, Ala., and Kenneth M. Viste, Jr., M.D., a neurologist from Oshkosh, Wis., who also continues to serve as the council's chairman.

The 15-member council, established by Congress in 1990, meets quarterly to advise the HHS secretary on proposed changes in regulations and carrier manual instructions which relate to physicians' services under Medicare and Medicaid.
