Shalala Names Nancy-Ann Min Deparle As Deputy HCFA Administrator

HHS Secretary Donna E. Shalala today announced the appointment of Nancy-Ann E. Min DeParle to be deputy administrator of the Health Care Financing Administration, the agency that administers Medicare and Medicaid, effective July 7. President Clinton earlier announced his intention to nominate DeParle to be administrator of HCFA following the resignation of current Administrator Bruce C. Vladeck later this year.

She is currently associate director for health and personnel of the Office of Management and Budget.

"Nancy-Ann brings a wealth of experience, and her term as deputy administrator of HCFA will help guarantee a smooth transition at a critical time for Medicare and Medicaid," Secretary Shalala said in announcing the appointment. "We are heading into a period in which we will be implementing some of the most significant changes in Medicare and Medicaid in their 30-year histories. Nancy-Ann's experience, good judgment and strong sense of commitment to public service will be critical to our efforts to modernize and improve these programs to better serve beneficiaries."

DeParle is a native of Rockwood, Tenn., and a graduate of the University of Tennessee and Harvard Law School. She was also a Rhodes Scholar at Balliol College, Oxford University.

At OMB, she has been responsible for budget and policy matters relating to all federal health programs, as well as veterans' programs and federal employee compensation and personnel practices. From 1987 to 1989, she served as Commissioner of Human Services in the Cabinet of Tennessee Gov. Ned McWherter.
