DEBORAH KONOPKO NAMED HHS REGIONAL REPRESENTATIVE
FOR NEW YORK REGION

HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson today announced the appointment of Deborah Konopko as the Secretary's Regional Representative for Region II, serving New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Konopko, the immediate former deputy secretary to New York Governor George E. Pataki, will serve as the Secretary's direct representative to the region, and will be responsible for guidance and the coordination of HHS policies in the region. Based in New York City, Konopko's leadership will serve as a vital link between the department and disaster relief efforts in the New York metropolitan area following the Sept. 11 attack at the World Trade Center.

"Deborah Konopko's experience and skills will prove invaluable as we continue to help New Yorkers and others affected by this month's devastating attack," Secretary Thompson said. "She will help us to fulfill our commitment to provide assistance wherever and whenever we can in support of the rescue effort and the healing process."

As New York's deputy secretary, Konopko developed and led administrative initiatives for the New York Department of Health, the Medicaid program and the insurance department. During her tenure, Konopko achieved a landmark agreement to control spending growth over a multi-year period and helped provide financial stability in the health care sector.

Prior to joining the Governor's office, Konopko was the assistant director for the New York City Office of Management and Budget, responsible for a $6.5 billion budget for the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation. She has also held positions as the deputy general counsel for the Massachusetts Department of Health, and as an adjunct professor at Suffolk University School of Management in Boston. Early in her career, Konopko was an associate in general corporate practice at Csaplar & Bok in Boston.

Konopko assumes the Regional Representative position today.
