JOSH VALDEZ APPOINTED TO HHS REGIONAL REPRESENTATIVE POST

HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson today announced the appointment of AltaMed Health Services Vice President Josh Valdez, D.B.A., as the Secretary's Regional Representative for Region IX, based in San Francisco.

In his new position, Valdez will be the Secretary's direct representative responsible for guidance and coordination of HHS policies in the region. The area includes the states of California, Arizona, Hawaii and Nevada, as well as Guam, the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands and the American Samoa.

"We are delighted to bring Josh Valdez into the HHS family," Secretary Thompson said. "His business expertise and extensive health care management ability will allow for strong leadership and guidance in a particularly diverse region."

Currently, Valdez is the vice president of operations at AltaMed Health Services Corp., a primary health care clinic targeted for minority and economically disadvantaged communities. In this role, he is responsible for the overall planning, direction and evaluation of several health care components, including AltaMed Medical Clinics, HIV and TB services and the managed care department.

Previously, Valdez was a health services administrator in the United States Air Force, managing a $40 million budget for the McClellan/Mather Medical Group and overseeing 14 medical sites.

Valdez holds a doctorate of business administration, graduating magna cum laude from Southern California University. He earned his master's of business administration in health services management from Golden Gate University in Sacramento.

He assumes the regional representative post today.
